Description
Medicine cats are Clan cats who treat diseases and injuries, and who receive directions and guidance from StarClan. They have their own den in the Clan camp, where they sleep, store herbs, and treat wounded or sick cats. Medicine cats are not allowed to take mates or have kits, (so that their work will not be disturbed), although, this has happened before (i.e Leafpool, Yellowfang). They also usually stay outside Clan rivalries. Medicine cats have a special way of getting their full name. For example, Leafpool was named so because she found the Moonpool. They are deeply respected by their Clanmates and no cat dares argue with them. Though most medicine cats believe in StarClan, a few rare exceptions (i.e. Mothwing), have become medicine cats even though they don't believe in StarClan.
Tasks
Some of a medicine cat's tasks are:

• Knowing all of the herbs and store a supply of them in their den
  
• Treating wounded and sick cats
  
• Assisting queens that are giving birth to kits
  
• Check up regularly on the health of Clan cats, (especially queens, elders, and kits)
  
• Visiting the Clans' sacred place (such as the Moonstone or Moonpool) at every half moon to seek guidance from StarClan
  
• Interpreting prophecies and omens and sharing them with the Clan leader
  
• Upon the death of the Clan leader, accompany the deputy to the Moonstone or Moonpool to be appointed as the new leader
  
• Training an apprentice as the Clan's next medicine cat
  
• Bearing the knowledge of battle training in case of emergencies
  
• Check up on StarClan to see about the future

Appointment and Education
Kits who wish to become medicine cats are apprenticed at the age of six moons to the Clan's current medicine cat. They are introduced to StarClan as a medicine cat apprentice at the first half moon after they gain apprenticeship. They earn their name at the Moonstone or Moonpool after successfully completing their training, assuming full responsibilities even while their mentor is still alive.
When an apprentice, the mentor, or full medicine cat, has them do tasks that lead up to being a full time medicine cat. The apprentice has to gather herbs, get water, or do other useful things. They are expected to watch carefully when their mentor is treating a cat, so that when the time comes, they can do it, too.
Special Cases
Some cats have been known to exchange their warrior training to be a medicine cat (for instance Littlecloud, Hawkheart, Jayfeather, or Mothwing) or life-altering experiences may take them on that path (for instance, Cinderpelt) but this is considered to be very uncommon.
All medicine cats also believe in StarClan, with the exception of Mothwing.

Medicine cats usually keep their role until they die with the exception of Goosefeather and Runningnose.

Herbs

• Alder Bark: Eases Toothaches
  
• Beech Leaves: For medicine cats to carry herbs more organized.
  
• Blackberry Leaves: (must be chewed up for pulp) Eases swelling of bee stings.
  
• Borage Leaves: (chewed and eaten by nursing queens) It produces more and better milk. It also brings down fevers.
  
• Burdock Root: (chewed for pulp) Lessens and heals the pain of infected rat bites.
  
• Burnet: (traveling herb) Is said to help minor bleeding on humans. Keeps a cat's strength up.
  
• Catmint/Catnip: (eaten) For greencough, also for whitecough.
  
• Celandine: (juice trickled in eye) Soothes damaged eyes.
  
• Chamomile: (eaten) Strengthens heart and soothes mind. Given to traveling cats for strength.
  
• Chervil: (chewed to extract juice of the leaves or root) For infected wounds and bellyache, respectively.
  
• Chickweed: (treat greencough) Effect is unknown.
  
• Cob Nuts: (made into ointments) Effect is unknown.
  
• Cobwebs: (press over wound) Soaks up and stops (or slows) bleeding. May also be used to bind broken bones.
  
• Coltsfoot: (chewed for pulp) Eases breathing or kitten-cough, as well as cracked or sore pads.
  
• Comfrey Roots: (chewed for poultice) Repairs broken bones or soothes wounds. Also used for wrenched claws. Can be used for itching, used for inflammation on stiff joints.
  
• Daisy Leaf: (chewed into paste) Eases pain of aching joints. Also a traveling herb.
  
• Dandelion: (white liquid applied to bee stings, leaves can be chewed) Soothes and heals bee stings. Leaves can be chewed to act like a painkiller.
  
• Dock: (chewed and applied to scratches, similar to sorrel) Soothes scratches, though can sting when applied. Soothes sore pads.
  
• Feverfew: (eaten) Reduces body temperature for cats with fever or chills. Also heals aches and pains, especially good for for headaches.
  
• Goldenrod: (chewed for poultice) Good for healing wounds.
  
• Heather Flower: (included in herbal mixtures) Makes swallowing easier and sweetens mixtures.
  
• Honey: (eaten, or for moss) Soothes infections, smoke-damaged or sore throats, and helps cats swallow other concoctions.
  
• Horsetail: (chewed for poultice, applied to wounds) Treats infections.
  
• Ivy Leaf: (to store other herbs) No Effect.
  
• Lamb's Ear: Gives cat strength.
  
• Lavender: Cures fever and chills.
  
• Mallow Leaves: (eaten) Soothes bellyache.
  
• Marigold: (petals/leaves chewed for poultice, juice can be used as well) Stops bleeding, infection, and used for inflammation of stiff joints.
  
• Mouse Bile: Extracted from the mouse. The only remedy for ticks, mouse bile is foul smelling, and is stored in moss. When dabbed on a tick, the tick falls off. Smell can be masked by wild garlic, or by washing paws in running water. If accidentally swallowed, can leave a horrible taste in mouth for days. Medicine cats always have to remember to wash their paws in a body of water, such as a creek or stream, after using mouse bile.
  
• (Dried) Oak Leaf: (stored in a dry place) Stops infection from setting.
  
• Parsley: (eaten) Stops a queen from producing milk if kits die, don't need milk, or are producing too much milk.
  
• Poppy Seeds: (chewed on) Puts a cat to sleep, soothes shock or distress, or eases pain. Not recommended for nursing queens.
  
• Ragwort Leaves: (crushed and chewed, if mixed with juniper berries, it can help aching joints) Treats aching joints and keeps a cat's strength up.
  
• Ragweed: (similar to Lamb's Ear.) Gives a cat extra strength and energy.
  
• Raspberry Leaves: (painkiller, stops bleeding during kitting) Possibly eases pain, and helps stop bleeding.
  
• Rosemary: (put on pelt of dead cat for burial) Hides the scent of death.
  
• Rush: (binds broken bones) Helps hold a broken limb in place, such as casts for Twolegs.
  
• Snakeroot: (applied to wounds) Heals poison.
  
• Sorrel: (eaten) Traveling herb.
  
• Stinging Nettle: (eaten by cat with poison, or made for poultice) Induces vomiting, or brings down swelling, respectively. Can be mixed with comfrey to help heal broken bones. Helps with wounds.
  
• Tansy: (consumed only in small doses) Cures coughs. Can be used to cure wounds and poisons. Stops cats from getting greencough. Soothes throats.
  
• Tormentil: (chewed and placed on wound) Root is good for treating all wounds and extracting poison.
  
• Thyme: (leaves can be chewed) Calms nervousness, anxiety, and cats who are in shock.
  
• Watermint: (chewed into pulp, then eaten) Eases the suffering that originates from a bellyache. Can also be used to hide scent of death of a living cat.
  
• Wild Garlic: (roll in) Prevents infection, especially rat bites.
  
• Willow Bark: Eases pain.
  
• Wintergreen: Treats wounds and some poisons.
  
• Yarrow: (chewed for poultice, or applied to some wounds) Extracts poison from wounds. Will make a cat vomit up toxins. The ointment will soften and help heal cracked pads.

• Deathberries: (kills cats) Kills a cat within minutes when consumed, also used to end a cat's life from agony.
  
• Foxglove Seeds: (treats heart) They can easily cause paralysis and heart failure. *They are often mistaken for poppy seeds because they look extremely similar. They are known to be a dangerous medicine. They are mentioned when Yellowfang scolds Cinderpelt and says, "You're a dangerous medicine cat! You could kill a cat by confusing foxglove seeds and poppy seeds!".*
  
• Holly Berries: Unknown effect. No value to medicine. *Holly berries, while not as dangerous as deathberries, but are still a danger to kits.*
  
• Nightshade: (kills a cat that is unable to be saved) Poisonous.
